Bishop
Chandler D. Owens is known and respected as a dedicated and tireless
servant of the Church of God in Christ and an outstalnding spiritual
leader who has brought hope and comfort to the members of his
congregation and the community. He served as chairman of the Commission
for the Constitution of the Church of God in Christ, and has served as
a member of the General Board of the Church of God in Christ since
1976, served as Second Assistant Presiding Bishop and First Assistant
Presiding Bishop, and served as Jurisdictional Prelate of the Central
Georgia Ecclesiatical Jurisdication.
In 1991, he became the founder and pastor of the Greater Community Church of God in Christ in Marietta, Georgia. In 1992, while serving as a General
Board member, Bishop Chandler D. Owens was assigned by Bishop Louis
Henry Ford to the local area to oversee insular matters as well as
those pertaining to the Central Georgia Jurisdiction. Later, he was
appointed Jurisdictional Prelate over Central Georgia . Bishop Owens has
continued to build on that same foundation of those who labored
diligently before his appointment.
In 1995 he
was designated as the Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ
in 1995. In 1996, he was invited to give the official prayer for
worldwide leaders at the 1997 Presidential Inaugural, and was selected
to serve as cochairman of the President's summit for America Future
Committee, and was honored by Ebony Magazine in April 1997 as one of
the 100 Most Influential Black Men in America. In 1998, the Georgia
House of Representatives passed a resolution
recognizing and commending Bishop Chandler D. Owens for his many years
of dedicated service to the Church of God in Christ and the citizens of
the State of Georgia.
Through the mighty hands of God, Bishop Owens was able to move
the Central Georgia Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction forward. He was instrumental in maintaining
consistency through financial stability and spiritual continuity in the
local church. These actions included the use of his personal funds.
Under Bishop Owens leadership this Jurisdiction has progressed to new
levels of spiritual growth. And yet there are even greater works to
come.
